Robert Having His Nipple Pierced (1971) Dir. Sandy Daley
“Daley did not want anything to distract from the central “work of art” - Mapplethrope himself, who had taken a hallucinogenic drug, and bare chested and glassy eyed, swooned in Croland’s arms, like Michelangelo’s “dying slave.” …. For the remainder of the thirty minute film, Mapplethorpe and Croland rolled around on Daley’s white floor in their black leather pants. Afterward when Mapplethorpe removed the bandages, he discovered that his gold earring was not dangling from his nipple after all, but from the skin underneath. “You missed it by about an inch!” he admonished Krohn, who assured him it was healthier that way. But while Mapplethorpe may not have had much experience with S&M, he knew that a “tit ring” had only one logical place, and he did not wear it again.” Mapplethorpe by Patricia Morrisroe
